 The mystical death or death of the ego is a term that has been used by many traditions mystical and psychonaut to refer to a transcendental state of consciousness. Some studies in the field of comparative religion broadly coincide with the equating of mystical death and the state of enlightenment pursued by different religions. ^1 2 In Jungian psychology has approached this state as "a fundamental transformation of the psyche". ³ In psychedelic culture it will be defined by Timothy Learyas a symbolic death experience in which the old ego must die before it can be spiritually reborn. ⁴

Also described as "dying before dying" is a voluntary dying, before bodily death, to the ego's own most false and erroneous personal identity, in its many facets (fears, anger, greed, ambitions, pride, dishonest appetites , laziness, indolence, complexes, etc.), origin of our suffering and unhappiness and cause of pain and suffering in our fellow men. ^5 6 7 8
