We dont measure, judge or quantify

 1. Start with the world, and then find out who is most affected by that world.

The girl is traded Bilal is a nothing compared to men like jayant The cop has to turn a blind eye to every day injustice .The beggers pick the dirt The cops uphold the rich, but the world is turning.

2. What is the tone

3. What are you trying to say ( not necessarily the plot) and every line and every scene should move that forward

4. Find visual ways to say dialogue, the power of the image

Write for Yourself

“I always write the movie that I want to go see, and just assume someone else will want to go see it, too. It’s got to be saying what you want to say the way you want to say it.

“I think to be a really good screenwriter, you have to be selfish, you have to write just for you. You’ll be your toughest critic, but trying to guess what someone else is going to like or want, that’s such a moving target. You’ll find yourself trying to write something that’s false.

“Constantly remind yourself to write what you’d want to see and that you can’t waste a word.”

Keep Your Audience Thinking Ahead

‘Write the movie you’d pay to go see.’ Another is ‘Never let a character tell me something that the camera can show me.’ Then there’s ‘You always want the audience wondering what’s going to happen next, never what’s happening.’

Know Where You’re Going

“You gotta know how it ends. You don’t have to know exactly the mechanics of the journey but you have to understand the journey of the hero –like how is he or she different? What does it cost them, what do they gain? And then what are you trying to say? The movies that move me the most don’t tell me what to think but ask a lot of questions. I’ve sat down a lot of times with a great idea and somewhere around the middle of the second act, the well runs dry and you realize you didn’t know where you were going. And I’ve got 10 of those sitting on my desk. Every now and then you have an idea that answers the whole thing. But yeah, for me, I gotta know where I’m going.

Listen to Your Story

“When you start writing a screenplay, you have very general awarenesses and ideas and themes that you want to try and explore. And then I think you have to be pretty malleable because the story is going to start telling itself and telling you that there are other things in there that you should look at. And other arcs and other things. You have to kind of ride with it. For me, if I’m really struggling with a scene and writing three scenes to justify this one thing, I know that I’m not listening to the story. There is a story that wants to be told and if you listen, it tells itself very easily.”

Find the More Interesting Route

“I’ll give you some advice from the actor in me: actors are allergic to scenes where they have to say ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ ‘hello,’ or ‘goodbye.’ I’m allergic to those scenes. I was as an actor. I am as a writer. There’s always a more interesting way to do the things we do all the time without thinking about them. If you’re bothering to write a script, think about them.”

Steven Spielberg once said that dreams are never screaming at you in the face. It's always the whispers that are telling the true tale of what you should or shouldn't be doing. Listen.

When you stop and just decide to write the script as if none of those things matter — as if the script is never going to be produced — it frees you from so many of those chains. Chains that have no applicable purpose anyway because every situation, every script, every development process, every journey, and every production is different.

Don't be afraid to write the story you want to write. Don't be afraid to write it how you want it to be written. Forget all of the things that are out of your control — and don't even exist yet — and just tell your story.

B+D are coming on the 10th

I live in a small pueblo in Spain. Rural Andalucía, lots of men who secretly visit brothels on the edge of town, whilst openly loving their Madonna's and virgins. Some of the older women in the barrio speak of their younger days, when women couldn't smoke or visit a bar on their own and everyone was quietly escorted until marriage; whilst unaccompanied men continue to stop and stare way after their wedding day. There is still that under-edge here- late night visits to the local bar at the end of my street is something i've learned to do without, as sometime after 11 o'clock the wolves appear and will not be ushered out. One day I'll tell you about the old man in his 80's, with loose, chattering false teeth who bought me a drink I didn't want, whilst telling me how much he liked women with my colour skin.

Anyway a few weeks ago whilst walking back from doing my "compras" on a bright warm and gently lit dusk that had lengthened into shadows; I saw a group of 12/13/14 year old girls who were walking just in front of me. Kid- women playing with phones and noise and laughs, all on the happy go-lucky threshold of becoming. Fair maidens of the high-tops and baggy pants. Such beauty- it almost made me lose my breath. I was just admiring how fabulous they were, when suddenly a group of boys on bikes and of a similar age ( except physically smaller as often teenage boys will be), came cycling down the street the other way, and seeing this incredible emanation of young female energy took it upon themselves to yell en masse at the top of their lungs " putttaas!!!" screamed in the direction of these sweet little goddesses on the verge of first womanhood. The noise they ( the boys ) made was as loud and as crass as it was fearful and reactive. I could see that, but I fear the girls could not, and anyway my Spanish is not good enough that I could have ever explained it. What i did notice though, was that already those girls, at that age, were already so inured and used to the feel of that particular insult upon their collective skin, that though barely just out of childhood- they had already bodily taken it in. They gave nothing back, said nothing- just kept on walking. A few days later whilst walking in a different town I saw this sign written on a wall. So perhaps down here things are changing. MB

Yesterday's view. The moon has now passed.

“ There is no way to grow into any new stage of life without giving up the outer vestiges of who we once were.. but these  used -up pieces of our old selves are seldom surrendered without a struggle. and this is precisely the internal conflict  that is told and retold in all of our stories ” Dara marks

This Aries no day nothing. ( finding poetry again)

No sit, or feel. Bound tight, the failings. They fall with heavy looks backwards; eager, full words of the unsaid and un-meant - but still the arrows arc. They, the only static in this fierce + bloodied ground. And so the sorrys fall, like a knight who lost the war. #crusades MB

Early morning pull inward. Beyond mind. New firm but unsettled. Aries full moon tomorrow. I don't know what I "want" today as in there's something that I want, that I can now have)

Mother Altar found.

She has fallen, it slides within, dejected rounds in rotting pieces. The frenzies that wont fit, cut to circumstance, in tears that have bled - holes that have formed. She must walk through blood, and stones and weary, carrying the mass of his weight on her neck. He is on her back, dick wrapped around, burrowing in, pushing in to the roots, to all that is found. MB
